Vacations and Home Security
The first step in increasing the security of your home while you are away is dont advertise the fact you are away from home.
Have a neighbor pick up your newspaper each day.
Have the same neighbor grab you mail from the mailbox so it isnt piling up which is a sure sign of an empty house.
Let your trusted neighbor know who should and shouldnt be around your home while you are away.
Use a home security checklist to review your home before leaving. Is there a weakness in your security plan that needs addressed before you leave on vacation?
Cut the lawn just prior to leaving so the sign of an overgrown lawn doesnt tip a potential burglar off to the house being unoccupied.
Leave any small valuable items such as jewelry at the bank in the safe deposit box.
Remove from view any items of valuable items that might be viewed from a window. Theres no reason to tempt a thief to break into your home.
Buy a few automatic timers to throw on lights at different periods of the night. Also consider putting a timer on a radio to play music during the day.
Dont leave tools lying around an opportunistic thief could use for breaking into your home.
Advise your local Police Department you will be away and ask them to do an extra patrol around your home.
These are just a few tips for increasing your home security while you are away on vacation. Remember it has to happen to someone so lessen your chances of it happening to you by putting your home security plan in place today.
