Common Home Security Mistakes
Having Great Home Security and Not Using It.
Far too often at the scene of a crime it turns out the doors werent locked or the home security system wasnt turned on because we were just going to be gone a few moments. Use all of the security devices of your home including locks and security systems. It doesnt matter if you are leaving for a week or ten minutes make sure your home is safe.
It never ceases to amaze me the number of people who have weak garage security. If you have an attached garage you are almost inviting criminals into your home via the garage if its left unlocked or easy access is provided. In addition much like an unlocked shed you are giving an opportunistic burglar all the tools he needs to break into your home. The lesson here is make sure your shed and or garage are just as secure as the rest of your house.
The Im Locked Out Key.
We are all guilty of this. Knowing that eventually you will lock yourself out a key is hidden outside for just occasion. Unfortunately burglars know this and just where to look to find this key which is probably hidden under a rock, a trash can, or by a bush. The first thing many burglars will do before trying to force entry into a home is look for the hidden key that many of us have. Give an extra key to a trusted neighbor or at least become creative where you plan on hiding your key.
Making your home look like an easy target. The Home Security Coach cant say this enough. When a burglar scans a neighborhood he will probably pick what appears to be the house with the least amount of risk for getting caught. Make your home look like a hard target by having home security system signs in place either real or fake. Have plenty of lighting and dont give the burglar a place to hide with shrubbery around doors and windows. Make the burglar think twice about entering your home and chances are hell pass for a weaker home with less security.
