Improving Home Security Through A Criminal Eyes
In order to improve the home security of your home you need to think like a criminal and view your home and property like a criminal. Here are a few examples of what you see and he sees as he cases your neighborhood a few days before his crime.
Homeowner: Sees beautiful growing bushes and shrubbery in front of the home.
Criminal: Sees a great spot to hide as he breaks into your home.
Homeowner: The wonderful front door with the etched glass.
Criminal: The wonderful front door with the glass easily broken so I can reach my hand in and unlock it.
Homeowner: I want to show everyone I support the NRA so Ill put this sticker on the back of my car.
Criminal: Woo, this guy must own guns. What if hes home Im likely to be shot.
Homeowner: I want to show off that I have a home security system so Ill put these signs in the yard like the security system company said.
Criminal: This guy has a home security system. Im passing this place for one of the other houses without home security systems.
Homeowner: Look at my brand new basketball hoop in the driveway.
Criminal: Looks like at least one male lives at this place and hes an athlete.
Homeowner: We can finish up this landscaping project on the weekend. Just leave the tools there.
Criminal: I wasnt planning on a robbery, but look theres a bunch of tools laying out that I could pry that door open with.
Homeowner: Who needs security locks Ill just keep the old ones on. There hasnt been any crime in this neighborhood that Ive heard of.
Criminal: Look at those old locks just begging to be picked or kicked in.
Homeowner: Id like to put more security lighting around my home, but think of all the money Im saving on my energy bill.
Criminal: That nice house over there doesnt have any lighting. Ill have plenty of time to find a weak spot in their home security without anyone ever seeing me.
Acting and thinking like a criminal is the best way to increase the security of your home. Take a walk outside your home right now and walk all around it. If you were a criminal what would you think? Do you think this home has a lot of home security or that this home would be easy to break into. By making your home appear to the outside world to be a hard target you are greatly increasing the chances of a criminal not giving you house a second look before moving on to another house with lower home security.
