There are certain items you must have in your home to keep your family and home secure both in a time of peace and an emergency. Having these items in your home and in good working condition is a requirement for protecting your family and home. How well you are prepared to handle an emergency could make all the difference in the outcome of an emergency.

An extensive first aid kit and by that I dont mean one of wallet size kits often given away at stores. Your first aid kit should be kept in a central location of your home and make sure everyone living in your home knows where it is kept.

Included in the kit should be bandages of several sizes, anti septic, gloves and a manual on first aid.

A Home Security System A home security system will prevent problems before they happen. The sight of home security systems signs in a front yard will send most burglars looking for an easier target which is a home without a home security system.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms - Preferably hard wired with a battery backup. Early warning is the key to preventing disasters in the home. Make sure your family knows exactly what to do and where to meet in case either the smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarms sound.

A weather radio that automatically sounds when watches or warnings are issued for your area. These radios will provide the weather forecast for your area 24 hours a day.

A Go Bag or in other words a disaster supply kit which you can quickly retrieve and take with you if a disaster were to occur at your home. Included in the kit should be water, prescriptions, contact phone numbers, non perishable food, a small radio with batteries, flashlights, a knife and can opener. Dont forget about rover and make sure you pack food and treats for him as well. We recommend having enough food and supplies in the Go Bag to last one week.

Fire Extinguisher Every home should have at least three multi-purpose fire extinguishers. One located on each level and dont forget the garage or basement. Fire extinguishers can prevent a much larger disaster from happening. Make sure all members of your family know how to use the fire extinguisher.

The items mentioned above will go a long way in times of disaster or to prevent a disaster in your home. Make it a priority to plan for the worst and pray for the best.
