Plant thorny shrubs near windows around the outside of your home. This will make it difficult for a burglar to hide while commiting the crime. In addition it makes it tough for a burglar to access your windows which is a common spot of entry in most house break ins.

Lock your shed and garage so you dont provide the tools or ladder for a criminal to break into your home. Many criminals wouldnt be able to resist the urge even if they werent planning a break in.

Make sure all windows have upgraded locks. A recent study found that one out of three home burglaries occurred through a window.

Consider installing security grills to your ground floor windows.

Make sure all windows have home security system labels on the regardless if you have a burglar alarm system in place or not.

Upgrade the lighting around your entire yard. Install motion sensor lighting.

Install a spy hole in your front door or a security grill so you can open the door without allowing someone access to your home. Many home invaders pose as though they have valid business at the home until the door is unlocked and then they force their way into the home.

Make sure your neighbors know who is and isnt around your home while you are away.

Never give anyone a key to your home. If you must give someone a key give them a key to a door you can easily replace the locks on.
