Using It Or Lose It
If you own a home security system then make sure to use it. When interviewing Police Officers they often mention those who have home security systems and the burglaries that occur in their homes because they rarely activate their burglar alarms. If you have a home security system then please use it.
Lock your doors. It will never happen to me is the thinking many people have, especially in rural areas. The truth is it has to happen to someone and why let it be you. Many burglars disguise themselves as utility workers so no one gives them a second look. They then ring your door bell and if no one answers try the door. If the door opens then you're about to be burglarized. Do the minimum in home security and lock your doors.
Trim bushes and shrubbery from around your home. Don't give the burglar a good place to hide while he breaks into your home. This goes for lighting as well. Light your house up so your neighbors can view your home. If you're worried about energy costs then consider purchasing motion sensitive lighting.
Don't advertise valuables such as electronics or works of art. These items should never be visible from the road. Many burglars are opportunistic and can easily be tempted by the sight of that new stereo system in your window. Also, don't display your new presents by means of leaving the box they came in out by the trash. Burglars often cruise neighborhoods on the night before trash pick up to see who owns what and which of these houses looks most appealing.
